Passing of John Kwissiwa
It is with profound sadness that the Council of the Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg (Pic Mobert First Nation) announces the passing of our former Gimaa (Chief) and long time Council member, John Kwissiwa, on August 29, 2108.
John was a passionate, strong and relentless community leader who was driven by a vision to achieve a prosperous and healthy life for his family and community. He served two terms as Gimaa and many more as a member of the Band Council, and following his retirement from politics last year, was settling happily into his new role as an Elder and advisor within the community and with outside organizations. John was particularly enthused with his more recent works in advocating for restitution and healing for the victims of the Sixties Scoop.
The Council and membership of the Pic Mobert First Nation extend our most sincere condolences to his partner, our current Gimaa Kwe Johanna Desmoulin, their children and the grand children to which he was a proud and loving Shoomis.
On behalf of the membership, we say Miigwetch to Johanna and their family for sacrificing the many hours over the years that John spent advocating for and advancing his community. John’s positive impacts are all around us and are a legacy to his commitment and now his family.
Funeral services for John Kwissiwa will be held in Mobert, Ontario on Tuesday, September 4, commencing at 10 a.m.
