Location: Union of Ontario Indians (UOI) Head Office
Nipissing First Nation, North Bay, ON

Working under the direction and reporting to the Social Services Director, the MMIWG (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls) Coordinator will work to establish a strong awareness campaign within the Anishinabek Nation to raise the profile of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls file as a priority for the Anishinabek Nation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review Anishinabek Nation Grand Council resolutions and research activities to date;
  • Ensure MMIWG information is highlighted in UOI social media tools;
  • Monitor daily media and government announcements, inquiries on MMIWG;
  • Develop a Facebook and webpage in collaboration with the Policy and Communications department;
  • Collect, survey and gather statistics on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls within the Anishinabek Nation;
  • Collect, survey and gather statistics related to missing and murdered indigenous men and boys;
  • Continue to showcase and promote Blanket of Hope at AN events, first nation events and other appropriate venues;
  • Consult with Anishinabek Kwe-Wuk (Women’s) Council to review their draft of  the initial strategic plan and build on it;
  • Establish an Advisory Committee;
  • Assist in minute taking, distribution and meeting logistics, and developing work plan(s);
  • Assist in development of funding proposals for strategic planning, Terms of Reference and Advisory Committee Activities, and yearly information sharing event, for example, retreat for MMIWG families;
  • Provide technical support and assistance and attend committee meetings;
  • Review results of Federal Government National Inquiry and RCMP reports on MMIWG and other documents;
  • Assist in the preparation of position papers for presentations or distribution;
  • Other duties as required.



  • College Diploma or University Degree in the Social Sciences, Social Welfare, Psychology, Criminology, Sociology, Indigenous Studies and other related disciplines;
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a coordination or supervisory role;
  • Knowledge of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls and various responses by First Nations’ Governments and Provincial and Federal Governments;
  • Keen interest in the Anishinabek Nation and knowledge of our First Nation member communities;
  • Some knowledge of traditional healing practices and ceremonial protocols;
  • Strong research, writing and communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of Computer software programs: including Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently;
  • Good organizational and facilitation skills;
  • Hold a current Ontario Driver’s licence and be insurable.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
